In the last 75 years the wild population of the Asian Elephant has dramatically fallen by 70% to as low as 35,000. Now classified as endangered, the Asian Elephant faces an uncertain future with loss of habitat and poaching major threats to its survival.
Taronga has joined forces with zoos across Australia in a conservation breeding program for Asian Elephants. The birth of Luk Chai, the first Asian Elephant born in Australia, marks a great success for Taronga’s breeding program. We need to continue this important program to raise awareness and help ensure the species’ survival.

I'm Nick De Vos and one of my responsibilities as a senior keeper is managing the Tassie Devils at Taronga Zoo. Tassie Devils are being wiped out in the wild at an alarming rate due to a horrific cancer. Taronga and Taronga Western Plains Zoos are working with other zoos across Australia to breed an insurance population of devils to release back into the wild when it's safe to do so.
